As people,
stories are a large part of who we are. Everyday we tell stories,
most times without noticing that we are doing it. When we tell
stories, we wish to engage people, to get reactions. We want them to
know something, about ourselves, someone else, or the world around
us. When people started making movies, they brought the same concepts
to film. But what makes a good movie? Obviously a beginning, middle
and end are vital. And having strong characters helps too. But what
other things make a good movie? On this blog, I'll explain what
elements make realistic and relatable characters and a
strong story line come to life.
What do we want out of a movie?
When we go to the movies, some of us, maybe most of us, want to simply be entertained. Others want to be inspired. And some of us just want to see that good looking cast member. But deeper then that, we want to go somewhere. Whether that be Middle Earth, Panem, Hogwarts, or a galaxy far, far away. We get tired of our lives on Earth, and want to see something different. Alongside that, we want to be awed. We want to be taken somewhere, and see something new. We want our logic and imagination to be challenged. We want to feel something. Personally, I believe one of the most effective ways to induce emotion in people is through movies. I'm not saying books, music, and art can't make you feel things, but when it comes to strong emotions, movies are the best option. The reason for this is the fact that there are characters, and a world, a story to get attached to. When you have a good storyline, its easy to forget that its not real when you're watching it play out on screen, you get so involved in it. All in all, we watch movies for entertainment, for inspiration, and for emotion. Watch for my next post on what makes a good story and what makes good characters in a story.
I agree with everything you said here! I love to be transported to a new world (especially Middle Earth) I also think that movies based on books (when done well) can help bring them to life and give you a chance to see your favorite characters again after finishing the book.

DeleteYes this is good! I agree we sometimes get tired with our lives, but that's not a good thing. Movies should show us how to be more content, and ultimately that contentment is found in Jesus. But then it is fun to imagine yourself in a different world and that's okay as long as it doesn't get so out of hand that we would rather be there than here.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely!
DeleteYes yes yes! You are such a good writer. I've honestly never really thought about WHY we watch movies. I guess I've always watched them for entertainment. This has completely changed my perspective and I agree with what you are saying here. I can't wait to hear more!
ReplyDeleteThank you! :)
DeleteI agree! I am really expressive through art, music, and books. But movies are awesome and huge and I think that a good, well made movie is food for the soul!! So exited for the next blog!!❤️
