More on story.
So, I haven't posted in a long time.... in my defense, no one came pounding on my door demanding I write another post. And this summer has been super busy, between short weekend vacations, working a couple informal jobs, and babysitting my own siblings, I am quite exhausted, and besides that haven't had time to post. OK, I did but I was too tired-ish ok? No guilt tripping. Anyway, this post will be going deeper into the story part of a film because obviously that's the whole point.
Beats
We kinda covered this in my other story post, but I'll elaborate a bit.
Beats are the important, or not, things that happen to characters in movies. So yeah i covered this, but I mostly called it story spine, so I'll differentiate the two now. They're basically the same thing. The spine is what holds the whole story together, and if you have too many small story lines and plots aside of the main ones, IT COLLAPSES. An example of this, sorry Harry Potter fans, is The Crimes Of Grindelwald. Yeah. If Fantastic Beasts was a little overloaded, Grindelwald was uh, overlyoverloaded. It was a little weird, it was confusing, and it took FOREVER to explain everything so it got boring. So, the spine needs to be small, not too small, and big, but not too big. Figure out what that looks like. So anyway, beats are the smaller things the spine doesn't outline, as you saw the spine is very basic.
Theme.
So the theme. Its basically a moral but not. I like to think of it this way, the theme shows up throughout the movie, while the moral may be only made clear at the end. I'm not sure if this is correct, but it sounds right, so we'll work with it. Themes can be really anything, though some movies appear to have no theme or moral. Like those horror/thrillers. "Don't ever walk through that creepy alley in the dead of night because that's when the creepy clowns are out!" You can work in some themes in that genre, but it can be harder.
Lastly, Acts.
So, plays are split into three act most times, but movies? Yup, its just not obvious. The first act is fairly short compared to the other acts, and introduces the characters, world, story, and beginning of conflict. The second act is longer, and is mostly about the conflict, and development of the characters into who they will be at the end. The third act is the resolution of everything the second act brought into play. Now, this is an incredibly basic break down because I am getting very tired of typing. So, that's about it. I'm hoping to post soon with some movie reviews, my opinions on movies AND my theories on Star Wars, and the upcoming Rise Of Skywalker which I am so excited for. I will also open up the floor for you guys to talk about your favorite movies, why you like them and your opinions on some Hollywood goings on. Only movie talk thank you, I'm not super into the Kardashians. May the force be with you, and the odds be ever in your favor. I love you 3,000. (Not you random stranger stalking me)
Comment if you got all those, or at least one!
Wow where did you ever learn all this!?!? Great post!!
